The Hollywood Bowl Jazz Festival takes place on June 17th -18th during National Black Music Month and near the 50th Anniversary of Hip-Hop Music (August 11, 2023). As curators of the Hollywood Bowl’s Pre-show, we will produce an experience illuminating the intertwiningly rich relationship between Jazz and Hip-Hop music.

Historically, Jazz and Hip-Hop music share the same cultural lineage in the music culture. Jazz emerged out of many different types of black music such as slave songs, ragtime, and the blues. Much like jazz, Hip-Hop - which originated in the Bronx during the 1970s, was a raw and energetic art form that became the voice of a generation of disenfranchised African American youth.

During the 1990s Jazz and Hip-Hop meshed well together culturally and musically and to celebrate this fusion, our vision for this year’s Jazz Village Experience at the Hollywood Bowl Jazz Festival will highlight the history and relationship of these two music genres with special vendors, exhibitions, live art, and art/photography displays as follows:
